Codes and conventions of a website

  • Clear, logical and appropriate navigation system. All the main content is easily demonstrated and bold, attracting the user to the key points of the websites, this is usually promotional techniques such as tour dates and sales, merchandise and the option to order the CD or in some cases the vinyl.
  • Make sure that the colours and fonts are suitable for the genre, using stereotypical colours for the specific genre. For examples dark colours like red, black and purples for Gothic bands, also having matching fonts allows you to identify the genre straight away.
  • Nowadays musical websites have Gifs and other moving images to intrigue and entice the audience. For a music website the images would include segments of videos, interviews, and other things that involve the band or artist.
  • On music websites they usually have their social media links dotted throughout the website, this includes Youtube, the biggest music video platform and Spotify, one of the biggest audio platforms for songs.

From this task i have learnt that different genres of music use relevant codes and conventions to create a unique and diverse website. Pop culture usually uses bright, vibrant and enticing colours with easy to read fonts and tabs. As pop is the biggest genre of music, it relates to the masses, of all ages. Rock usually has a lot of blacks, reds and whites to create an abstract website. However they don't tend to rely on their website as they don't really need the class or bold, catchy  website. From this task i have also gained knowledge about artists websites. Before this task, I had never looked at an artists website. With more relevant social media platforms, i just use them instead of their websites. The website is clean, with a basic portfolio about who the artist are, their history and usually a few images. It's also a good place to purchase their album as they commonly have links to Apple Music and Spotify, the option for a tangible CD is also there, as not everybody uses technology to stream music.

From doing this task it has aided my understanding on how the film industry and institution has changed over the past century. I now know why and when the blow up of music videos occurred throughout history. Back in the day, a music video was very much just the artist or band with a instrument playing into a microphone, from doing this task, i have realized how important a music video is to capture the song in footage and it gives the lyrical aspect the reality it needs. Each lyric means something to the song and due to the rapid progression of music videos, it can be represented in unique and immersive ways. I've also learned that over the years artists spend a lot of time and money on top quality directors and studios. They also started to care about the audience more as the development of music videos has seen a rise in popularity and money. In essence, the music video is a some kind of short film for the song, it's representing. In history, there has also been technological breakthroughs that have aided the audience members throughout time. When MTV was first established, it just replayed through existing music videos. This allowed publicity to smaller bands who could therefore go mainstream. Overall, having the introduction of music videos brought far more benefits to the industry, it also allowed directors, film makers, prop designers and clothing brands to benefit from the revenue processed through  these videos.
